Elizabeth Mayville • Profile

Eizabeth Mayville

From lovingly rendered portraits to still-life and landscape paintings, Elizabeth Mayville chooses unexpected subjects such as a lantern or even a Brita water pitcher and breaks each one down into simplified planes of color and light.  Her work can initially be perceived as simple, calm and sweet; however her persistent use of gray gives each piece an almost melancholic undertone upon further reflection.  This neutral palette is a consistent feature in her oil paintings, as are her minimal compositions and strong horizons.  Sensitive and beautiful, Mayville’s paintings capture the artist’s sense of wonder with the world as well as her grasp of the impermanent nature of life.

A resident of Grand Rapids, Mayville chooses to represent the places and objects that make up her immediate surroundings in her paintings.  She expressed an interest in drawing since childhood and now enjoys the challenge of convincingly representing a familiar place or object with the goal of generating an emotional response from the viewer.  She has found her series of paintings depicting animals of the Midwest to be a particularly rich source of emotion which resonates not only with people from the surrounding area, but also with those from across the country.

Elizabeth Mayville • Statement

My work has always in some way revolved around the idea of "home". I have huge amounts of pride and love for my family, city and state, but I also recognize that the comfort they provide is temporary and therefore bittersweet. Family members pass on while cities and states stumble and fall. Whether images of seedlings, Michigan wildlife, local buildings or family members, my paintings are a reflection of my adoration for "home" as well as the quiet anxiety that stems from being invested in something so beautiful and so completely temporary.
