Marissa Voytenko

Quiet and contemplative, Marissa Voytenko’s abstract paintings explore pairings of fear and freedom as well as order and disorder. In a language of squares and grids, she works through concepts of structure, deconstruction and chaos.

Voytenko’s medium of choice is encaustic - an ancient tradition that predates painting with oils. Pigments are added to a molten mix of beeswax and damar resin, and painted onto a wooden surface while hot. She also incorporates music sheets, pages from poetry books and children's drawings in her work along with other mixed media elements.

Marissa is the recipient of the prestigious Alden B. Dow Solo Exhibition Award from the Dow Museum of Art and Science in Midland, Michigan and a fellowship from the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center in Forest Hills, MI. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and at the Primus Gallery in L’viv, Ukraine. Born and raised in northern California, Marissa has travelled widely and lived for various stretches of time in Italy, Belgium, Austria and Ukraine. She received her BA in Art from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California and Master of Fine Art from Boston University. Marissa currently lives and works in Grand Rapids, MI together with her husband and two young children.

Marissa Voytenko • Statement

I am wax-based painter. I have chosen encaustic paints as my main medium for working because I have come to appreciate and enjoy the way the fluid hot wax pushes me beyond precision. The medium helps me to be more honest and more free. I am also attracted to its mysterious, cloudy quality as well as its malleability. So, when I am working I do a lot of layering as well as scraping wax away. This process helps me to find a composition that harmonizes well.

In contrast to the fluidity of the medium with which I work, I am a very orderly person and I think in grids. Much of my work is centered around structures - squares, grids, blocks and towers - and occasional text and drawn images. When I begin creating, I am very organized as I map out my composition in a grid formation. Sometimes, the grid is comprised of strips of paper and sometimes the grid is drawn. However, as the work progresses my decisions become more intuitive and less thought out. The overall feel of the work is more expressive and painterly. The imagery in my work is abstract and usually carries a narrative. I draw inspiration from a myriad places and experiences but often the drive to create is fueled by a present circumstance that I am mulling over in my inner psyche.
