Meridith Ridl

When experiencing the work of Meridith Ridl, there is a sense that the viewer is witnessing something deeply personal.  Her delicate pencil drawings, occasionally accentuated with a loose watercolor wash, are a gentle yet highly rendered depiction of objects of value to the artist.  Approaching abstraction, they delicately depict torn phonebook pages, threads, tousled bed sheets and other seemingly ordinary bits of everyday life.  Elevating these fragments and bringing them to the attention of the viewer, Ridl constructs a world in which details are enormously important.

Since earning her Master of Fine Arts from University of Michigan in 2001, Ridl has exhibited her work nationally and internationally.  Building up significant drawings from a series of tiny papery wrinkles and subtle twists of fabric, she captivates the viewer.  The emotional depth and keen observation involved in creating each piece is immediately apparent and warrants considerable admiration.  Understated and poignant, Ridl’s drawings are a quiet celebration of the tattered, the overlooked, and the secretly significant.

Meridith Ridl • Statement

With images that include things torn, scattered, wrinkled, and worn as well as pairs, bows, threads, and words, my work often intertwines suggestions of impermanence and loss with suggestions of intimacy and connection. Subjects closely rendered may coexist with the abstract, the pretty with the awkward, reassurance beside uncertainty. Things ordinary, overlooked, discarded, or delicate often become players in the work with hope that even these fragile traces—a wrinkle, a drip, the heat left on a pillow—can be tangible reminders, connecting us to the transitional nature of being and to the intimacy that unfolds within the mundane.
