Randi Ford • Profile

Randi Ford

Randi Ford draws her inspiration directly from nature.  Whether on a local day trip or travelling across Michigan, she packs up her paints, hikes and begins her reference work in gouache.  She then completes larger pieces in her studio in acrylic on board - layering, integrating pattern and reworking areas.  Although she begins each piece with a vision and the goal of capturing nature’s beauty as she experiences it, she describes her work as coming alive as she develops each in her illustrative, slightly stylized approach.

Immediately apparent in her work is a connection to the Group of Seven.  Her use of color and stylistic interpretation of the landscape, her commitment to capturing nature’s energy and spirit and even thematic references such as the lone tree and or an unearthly sky all underscore an appreciation for their work.

Simplified yet accurate, she filters out all unnecessary details and at the same time compresses a mass of visual information into her work: intricate intertwining of branches, patterns created by leaves, water or clouds.  While each element shares the same illustrative simplicity, she brings her work to life with the color, emotion and movement she experiences in nature.

Randi Ford is a painter and illustrator living in Grand Rapids, MI.  She grew up in Sturgis, MI and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration from Grand Valley State University in 2012.

Randi Ford • Statement

We often retreat to the pristine natural world in order to find peace, and escape the evils and hardships of society. Through my work I capture the divine spirit, beauty and peace found within our natural world. Each painting is of a still moment of time, but is brought to life with the movement created with my strokes.
These images are meant to bring viewers to a calm and peaceful meditative state. I create each painting from photographs I have taken throughout my journey and represent the beauty I felt along them in each one. I paint each piece with love and passion, and hope the viewers can feel the energy and emotion I felt when creating the piece.
